Off the coast of Australia near the Great Barrier Reefs, live the Barrier Reef Chromis in schools of brilliant yellow and silver. Also known as Yellow-back Puller or Shining Puller, this beautiful fish can carry on a life of up to fifteen years and grow to 4 inches long. Adult Chromis nitida will congregate in tight schools and often hover under shelves and venture out in early mornings to feed on a variety of algae and fleshy food resources. It is recommended to have aquariums of at least thirty gallons per Barrier Reef Chromis to allow ample room for traveling in schools and avoid stress due to overpopulation. Male Barrier Reef Chromis can be territorial if not allowed this consideration of space requirements.
Completely safe for reef tanks, this Chromis is an excellent addition to create an atmosphere of social interaction between distinct species, as they often travel along the same pathways as other tank mates grabbing food debris along the way. Due to the communal need of the Chromis, caring for them can be a moderate challenge to provide adequate food to aid in the continuity of the social structure and keep bullying to a minimum. The innate hardiness however allows even the most novice of hobbyist to enjoy this glimmering delight.
