The Convict Tang primarily inhabits the reefs stretching from the Solomon Islands to Tahiti in the Indo-Pacific Region and lives in small groups with other Convicts. It is possible to have multiple Convict Tangs in the same enclosure if allowed plenty of room to swim and all are introduced at the same time. Also called Convict Surgeonfish, they are very aggressive to other Tang species, and it is suggested to only house with other Convicts. Typically, an aquarium of at least 120 gallons can house 2 to 3 Acanthurus triostegus successfully and still have room for other similar-sized fish. Adult Convict Tangs grow to around 8 inches in just a few short years and display highly active and enthusiastic social formations with other tank mates.
The high metabolism of the Convict Tang can be effectively controlled by providing generous amounts of seaweed greens and algae growth several times per day to meet the nutritious needs of their herbivore diet. Tangs are quick eaters so caring for them requires a moderate level of attention to guarantee that any other fish can obtain enough food to stay healthy as well. Convict Tangs enjoy reef life and are non-destructive to live rock and coral, making their homes in caves and hideaways throughout their environment.
