At only 9 inches long this heavyweight is aggressive to species similar in shape and coloration. Tank mates can peacefully include larger variations of Butterflyfish and other Tangs provided they are dissimilar in shape and coloration. This beautiful species is often referred to as Powder Blue Surgeonfish.
Despite the need for territorial security, it is very reef safe and actually an energetic cleaner and attention fanatic. The moderate concern needed to properly care for the Acanthurus leucosternon, they can be a delicate species, are sufficiently justified by the colorful addition to the marine environment. Hobbyists note that near perfect replication of the natural Sri Lanka ecosystem is required to maintain the health and vitality of the Powder Blue Tang. In addition to ideal water conditions, generous amounts of seaweed and algae which are supplemented with oceanic nutritional preparations will promote a natural defense against disease and support the seemingly never-ending herbivore appetite. Due to the very vigorous eating habits, some slower feeding fish may require different techniques to be able to reach their food before the other tangs beat them to it.
